R.I.P. Scooter (1998 - 2008)

I just found out that "my" dog, Scooter, passed away yesterday.

He was just over 10 years old (70 dog years).

My family had the privilege of having him as a puppy. He brought lots of joy, and never enjoyed his showers. We watched him grow, thought him how to sit, roll, jump and shake hands; then thought him how to race & jump off the gate pillar, and yet never quite figured out why he howled everytime the "paper lama" guy drove past.

He kept us company for 8 solid years. When we moved to Bangsar, we decided to give him up due to the space constraints. Thankfully, he was adopted by a loving family that cared for him and his mother, Snowy (who is still alive!).

I don't think we made the right choice in giving him up. Dogs really are a man's best friend, even if they bite your slippers over and over again.

Scooter - I hope you're barking from doggie heaven by now. Thank you for those good times!

Making sense of 55 sen

Scene 1: Big buff guy in front of me. Orders enough for two buff guys. And then he orders tartar sauce. Cashier gives him a plastic tub with a squirt of sauce. Like toothpaste squirt. For 55 sen. Buff guy looks pissed. But instead of using brute force, he just orders another squirt. That's another 55 sen. Next!

Scene 2: Old homeless guy walks in. Looks lost. Stares at Value Meal menu. Ponders. Then orders an ice cream in a cone. It's on a special offer of 55 sen after tax. Twist? He pays, and gets change. Ponders. Then inserts coins into the donation box.

Only at McDonald's. Or maybe just Bangsar.

My fortnightly affair

Waiting for my turn with the local barber. This one is in Lucky Garden.

There's this little charm with the local Indian barbers which is hard to explain. I remember going to the barber next to Raju's PJ on the last Sunday of every month, with my dad and brother. That was fun also because we got fed a good meal, right after.

I used to always leave the barber with a random hair style. Most of the barbers are from South India, so their command of every language besides Tamil is limited to: short, straight, line, and side burns. If you didn't say any of this, you'd probably leave the place looking like Rajnikanth - Basha / The Boss, you get to pick.

A few months ago my brother taught me a new trick. Upon sitting, just say (with hand gestures): machine, 4 on top, 2 on the sides. Close my eyes, and within 15 minutes, I'm done with a style that would make any GI proud.

It's my turn now. For 12 bucks, the occasional blade mishaps, blunt scissors, and Tamil music - Indian barbers rock!

Devi's Corner is relocating

If you're a Bangsar fan, then this will be news.

Devi's Corner Bangsar - new location

The ever popular Devi's Corner is relocating to the corner lot formerly occupied by the famous Chinese restaurant, Fu-Yu (Cheap Charlie). They are targeting to be operational on January 2, 2008. (I am not sure if this will involve any downtime in the supper supply for the Bangsar clubbers)

Word on the street is that the owner of the block housing the current Devi's Corner intends to sell his entire shop lot. The Fu-Yu lot is supposedly owned by the group behind TMC. (Can anyone confirm this?)

Personally, I feel this new lot is much better suited for Devi's Corner. They will be taking up both floors, and the location is closer to the Telawi central attractions. Also on the same block are 7-Eleven, Kiosk and Telawi's one-and-only DVD shop.

Someone mentioned that Nirwanas should take over the old Castle corner lot to compete with Devi's. But that's just plain bad luck considering how Castle has been bad business for the recent string of tenants. I think Nirwanas will do just fine where they are, and continue to give Devi's a run for their money. And a steady supply of awesome fried bitter gourd.
